I am greatly saddened by the news. To live to our age and then only to have
your life prematurely shortened by street thugs is a real tragedy! I had not
seen Fan Shih-Wen after graduation, so I can't say much about him. I do
remember him back in our college days to be a quiet, soft-spoken but hard
working, smart student. My best regards to the loved ones he had left.

Dear Classmates and Friends:
I felt very saddened to attend Sun, Fang's 孫璠 memorial service at
Rose-Hillside Chapel in Los Angeles, on June 27, 2003. He passed away at the
age of 61, totally unexpectedly and senselessly. From our NTUEE66 class,
Hong Shin-Tse 洪欣次's wife, Wu Cheng-Ping 吳成萍, and myself were present. Here are some
of the observations and my personal feelings I would like to share with you.
All Sun Fang's family members are present in the service. His
wife Yang Sue-Feng (杨素芬 Sulia), three grownup children (Damon, Nancy, and
Raymond), and Nancy's husband (Captain Geoff of US air force flying
harriers and just back from operation in Iraq), were present. I will send
you the Eulogy for John Fang Sun, once I have a chance to scan the document. If you want to send your personal condolence to Sulia, feel free to
call her at 805-376-9941 at Thousand Oaks, a suburb city near LA.
Obviously, the tragedy is a big blow to Sun's family. I have
talked to Yang Sue-Feng to express the condolence of our entire class. She
is a very strong lady under the circumstances. Even though she and John were
separated a few years ago, she wrote very touching words of memories to say
goodbye to Sun Fan and to her children's father.
My message to all my friends is to protect yourself and your
family everywhere you go, especially if you live in a metropolitan area.
You have to be prepared for unexpected situations all the time. Kai-Ching's
emergency messages are indeed very thoughtful and important. At our age, we
are not living just for ourselves. There are many of our beloved ones and
friends who cannot bear the loss of a husband, a father, or a friend so
abruptly. Life is kind of short and difficult to control. We are reaching
the age of fading away gradually. I agree with many of you that we should
maximize the time we spend with our family and friends. Fames, power, and
wealth are endless pursuits. We are really running out of time to enjoy all
we have at hand.

Dear Kai-Ching;
I read your email about the unfortunate passed away of
our classmate Sun Fan, I feel very sad and the precious memories in Taiwan Univ always in my mind.
Sun Fan was the most helpful classmate during my study
in NTU. He was very warm and kind to me and I will
never forget. I still remember he toured me about the
city of Tainan and explained the historical and scenic
sites of the city.
I pray that God will comfort his family and guide them
through this time of sadness. The wicked people will
eventually be punished by law or by the judgment of
God.
With our heartful sympathy to the Sun's whole family.

Dear all:
I was in shock when I heard the sad news. I wish that the police will catch these bad guys quickly so they will no longer be able to harm another good man
and break the hearts of his family and friends.
I live very close to John's place in a different city. As matter of fact, we lunched together once a while; sometime he called me, most of the time I called him
when I did not hear from him for a while because he lived by himself.
He was such a nice guy. When we lunched together, we like to debate about the future of Taiwan and China a lot, and it was fun. He also told me he was a
very good dancer, and he took dancing as his hobby and exercise.
Although John is no longer with us, however, I am sure his spirit will stay will us for ever, Let's all pray that John will have lasting peace in heaven, and may
God bless his family.

Dear KC: I am, like many other classmates, shocked and saddened to hear
about the recent death of Sun Fan ! Recent events remembered: First Fan
Shi-Wen in airplane crash then this . . . . By now it has become clear to me
that life is unpredictable and can be VERY short. I still remember with
gratitude that, close to ten years ago Sun Fan was one of the kind people
investing in my tiny start up company. While expressing my deep condolence
to Sun Fan's family, I would like to ask that we NTUEE66 survivors should
maintain more frequent contact and care with one another as we continue to
age . . . .

From: Chung-ching Chen <chen1@un.org>
I haven't checked my email box for a couple of days, so when I opened it up
and
saw a series of Sun Fan's name in the subject lines, I hesitated to read
the mails
for a while. That his death was not of disease but caused by senseless
street gang
attack made me felt great injustice and sadness.
He was the first classmate I visited in US when I drove from Baltimore to
NY around
1968/69. At that time he was already married and lived in Newark, in the
vicinity of
Seton Hall University, not too far from NY. Although the apartment
building he lived
was a tall one, the surrounding streets were quite convoluted. I once spent
more than
an hours circling around to try to reach his apartment. With his patient
telephone
guidance, I finally ended the ordeal.
Nevertheless, because of his close location to NY, I visited him two or
three more
times when I was on my way to NY. We talked about many subjects and in
political views
we differed. But mainly because of my other involvements I didn't visit
him again.
Even when I moved to NY in 1974, I didn't know when he moved to LA.
Sun Fan was a man of persistence, a good trait even for a man of
engineering and
science. He would make his view after some thinking. How could such a
decent man
met such a violent death. If I didn't skipped the LA trip on my way to
Shanghai
about two weeks ago, ...
My dear classmates, if any of you will visit or pass through Shanghai from
now until September 7, do feel urged to give me a call (21-6876 9382)so we may meet
and reconnect
some past memories.
Chung-ching 陈重慶
P.S. I wrote this email yesterday, but the editor failed to load. I think
our memory to our lost classmates have no time limit.

Dear Chung-Ching and classmates,
There are so many beautifully written notes on Sun Fan, filled with feelings and
memory, especially this one from Chung-Ching. I trust Sun Fan must have gotten
these blessings from his dear old classmates, enters heaven with comfort and
pride. Sun Fan's sudden death is totally unjustified. It is the world we're
living in. We have lost the balance between the material pursuit and virtual
development.
Fate is not something to be predicted. Let's give our forgiveness to the past as
we are a part of creating it.
May Sun Fan enjoy forever peace and happiness in another space.
